Exodus To Jazz is doing something different this month. The great jazz series is bringing two performances of the Off-Broadway play Monk-The Play, by acclaimed playwright Laurence Holder and starring Rome Neal, both winners of the Audelco Award for excellence in African-American Theatre, up from NYC to Rochester for performances on January 29th and 30th. Monk is a is one character play exploring the genius and mystery of jazz icon Thelonious Monk. On Saturday, January 16, Symphony Space presents „Celebrating Chick Corea.” Chick Corea is one of the most prodigious performers and prolific composers of our time. The concert features performances of many of his greatest „hits” as well as lesser-known treasures by a number of long-time Corea collaborators. The all-star cast assembled specially for this tribute in consultation with Corea, who will be in the house for the celebration, includes Gary Burton, Geoffrey Keezer, Hans Glawischnig, Antonio Sanchez, Marcus Gilmore, the evening’s musical director Tim Garland, Steve Davis, Diane Monroe, Jeremiah Campbell and The Harlem String Quartet. The event is presented in collaboration with Chamber Music America, which will honor Corea during its national conference „Big Ideas for Presenting Small Ensembles” January 14-17.
The recipient of 15 Grammy Awards and nominated a total of 51 times, Chick Corea is best known for his work with Return to Forever, Origin, the Elektric Band, his duo with Gary Burton and his numerous super trios and quartets. Corea has been a transformative force in music for over 40 years and has worked in many styles and genres, with musicians from the jazz, classical and pop music worlds.
Serving as the evening’s musical director is saxophonist Tim Garland; hailed as „a stunning virtuoso” by the „Daily Telegraph,” he was named Musician of the Year in 2006 by the Cross-Parliamentary Jazz Society. Vibraphonist Gary Burton is well known for his lengthy collaboration with Chick Corea: the duo has won five Grammy Awards, most recently in 2009 for „The New Crystal Silence.” Bassist Hans Glawischnig has emerged as an up-and-coming talent in the international jazz scene, performing with Stefon Harris, Paquito D’Riviera, Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau and Ray Barretto. Violinist Diane Monroe has performed with a wide array of artists ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Max Roach, establishing herself as a premiere crossover artist.

Seria de concerte Teach Me Tonight cu Harry Tavitian de la Institutul Cultural Român (Aleea Alexandru nr. 38) ajunge joi, 12 noiembrie, la ora 18.30, la rădăcinile jazzului. Harry Tavitian şi invitaţii săi – Vali „SirBlues” Răcilă (chitare, voce), Marcian Petrescu (muzicuţă, voce) şi trupa Legacy – vor susţine un concert intitulat „Roots” şi dedicat muzicii blues şi spirituals. Vor fi prezentate – în note şi cuvinte – momente din istoria bluesului, de la worksongs, blues tradiţional până la bluesul electric. Explicaţiile nu vor fi didactice, ci fireşti şi spontane precum însuşi bluesul.
Harry Tavitian şi-a început cariera în 1970 cu blues – gen aflat la originile jazz-ului şi sursă constantă de inspiraţie pentru muzicienii de jazz. Promotor constant, apoi, al jazzului de avangardă, a continuat să cânte şi blues arhaic. De-a lungul anilor, a fost iniţiatorul unor formaţii de gen, cu o paletă mergând de la rhythm & blues (1971) până la blues electric („Blues Community”, începând cu 1985). După 1990, odată cu invazia bluesului comercial, s-a apropiat din ce în ce mai rar de acest gen. Consideră că astăzi este timpul unei reveniri la blues – muzică a libertăţii interioare – ca leac al crizei umane asociate cu depersonalizarea, sub presiunea societăţii de consum: „Bluesul s-a născut dintr-o mare suferinţă – cea a sclavilor negri din America sfârşitului de secol 19 – dar şi din puterea de a transcende suferinţa prin muzică, de a-i da un sens. Şi pentru noi, în România de până în ’90, bluesul a fost un strigăt de libertate. Din păcate, astăzi lucrurile valoroase din blues sunt foarte puţin cunoscute, fiind promovat îndeosebi bluesul comercial, de divertisment. Se ajunge până la confuzii de gen, melodiile lente din muzica pop fiind numite bluesuri. Împreună cu invitaţii mei vrem să vă aducem bluesul autentic, care, mai mult decât o muzică, este o stare de spirit”. (vezi înregistrare concert 2006) „SirBlues” înseamnă Servesc Blues-ul şi vine de la latinescul Servus. Cânt blues tradiţional, acustic, folosind instrumente specifice: chitări Dobro sau National (cu corp metalic), Banjo Guitar etc. Totdeauna m-a atras bluesul. Ăsta-i un mod de viaţă. De altminteri, trăiesc destul de blues. Nu cred ca ar mai fi existat astazi orice alta muzică, daca n-ar fi fost bluesul. (…). Bluesul nu inseamna tristeţe. E viaţa de zi cu zi, cu bucuriile şi tristeţile care o colorează, sau cum spunea mai demult prietenul Hendrix: « Bluesul este exact ca o piatră! Te ajută să treci râul fără să te uzi!»” – spune Vali „SirBlues” Răcilă, unul dintre invitaţii lui Harry Tavitian. Marcian Petrescu este singurul muzician român de blues care s-a dedicat în exclusivitate muzicuţei. Compune blues şi interpretează atât blues tradiţional, acustic, cât şi blues electric. Muzicuţa este abordată de artist sub toate aspectele, artistic şi tehnic deopotrivă. Mânuită de Marcian Petrescu, izbuteşte să imite într-un mod remarcabil vocea umană şi să accentueze mesajul pasajelor vocale, îngânând, plângând, râzând… Legacy, trupă alcătuită din Ovidiu Turcu şi Andrei Pereţianu – chitară, Sabin Turcu – bas, Tani Turcu – tobe, este o trupă de heavy metal înfiinţată la Bucureşti în urmă cu nouă ani. Membrii săi cochetează şi cu genurile premergatoare heavy metal-ului – rock clasic şi mai ales blues. Fani Harry Tavitian de peste 15 ani, ei i s-au alăturat în 2008 într-un proiect de suflet: acela de a revela, împreună, trăirile bluesului. Intrarea la concertul de la ICR este liberă, în limita locurilor disponibile.

In cadrul proiectului \’Imagini vechi din Romania\’, editura Infarom a lansat noul site \’Vechiul Bucuresti in imagini\’, o arhiva web continand sute de imagini din vechiul Bucuresti, grupate in galerii tematice: Subiecte citadine (Grafica sec. 18, Grafica sec. 19, Pictura sec. 19, Foto sec. 19, Foto 1900 – 1910, Foto 1911 – 1930, Foto 1931 – 1949) si alte subiecte (Familia regala, Traditii populare, Moda veche, Reclame vechi).
